Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam is a test of medical coding proficiency that assess 17 areas of knowledge. It includes questions in a coding scenario to test the proper application of CPT® procedure codes, HCPCS Level II supply codes and ICD-10-CM diagnosis code of which medical providers use to submit claims to payers. Prerequisites for the exam
For CPC exam it is strongly recommended to have knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy (or AAPC courses). Also if you do not have 2 years of work experience before taking CPC exam, you will receive a CPC-A credential after passing. The “A” here stands for an apprentice. Once you submit proof of 2 years of coding work experience, you can have the apprentice status removed from your credential. The Career Step program satisfies one of the two years required.
