The applicant must complete the eligibility standards described on these web pages and documented in the certification handbooks in order to acquire a PMI certification. The candidate must then pass an examination.

How do I schedule a certification exam appointment?

Once you are available, PMI will e-mail you examination scheduling instructions with your eligibility code, which you will need when scheduling your exam appointment at a testing center.

Where will the examination be given?

All PMI tests are available at Pearson VUE Testing Centers throughout the world. Pearson VUE’s website has a list of locations.

If I fail the exam, can I take it again?

If you don’t pass the first exam, we encourage you to keep studying and try again. You’re allowed to take the exam three times within a year. After three attempts, you must wait a year from the last exam before reapplying. This rule is to ensure exam security and prevent too much exposure of questions to one person. However, during that year, you can apply for any other PMI certification. If your one-year eligibility period ends without passing the exam, you need to reapply for certification.

Do I have to be a member to apply for a PMI certification?

No. PMI membership is separate from PMI certifications. However, as a PMI member, the candidate will have access to many benefits including discounts on your certification exam fee as well as discounts on professional development opportunities to help with the maintenance of certification(s).

No. There are separate fees and separate processes to renew your membership or your certification. Membership is on a one-year cycle and your certification renewal is on a three-year cycle.
