COBIT format is an outline of managing the I&T infrastructure and also includes governance of the I&T infrastructure. It outlines governance and management objectives into five domains.

The COBIT format and product architecture consists of 3-level structure with the following sections

  • Business requirements – They are the requirements by the business from the I&T infrastructure and includes metrics like availability, confidentiality and compliance.
  • IT resources – It is the actual I&T infrastructure which consists of the hardware, I&T infrastructure, software applications, information, and the I&T human resources.
  • IT processes – They are categorized into domains and processes.

COBIT 2019 Framework has its governance and management objectives as per the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) – 38500. The governance objectives focuses on guiding and monitoring of the I&T infrastructure. The management objectives focuses on developing and executing activities for achieving the enterprise objectives.

All of the objectives relates to a process in the COBIT Core Model and there are 40 governance and management objectives, as

The COBIT 2019 Framework can be used to pursue operational excellence as

  • Define focus area
  • Define design factor(s)
  • Apply cascading goals to support prioritization of management objectives as per enterprise goals. Prioritize governance and management objectives. Capture value from the components of the governance system
  • Design a Tailored Governance System
  • Implement the Tailored Governance System
  •  Implement Continuous Improvement
