A focus area illustrates a specific governance topic, domain or issue that can be addressed by a  collection of governance and management objectives and  their components. The COBIT 2019 Framework lay emphasis on focus areas for governance and management of I&T infrastructure. The areas to focus are of prime importance for the organizations to address at outset.

A focus areas can include: small and medium enterprises, cyber security,  digital  transformation, cloud  computing, privacy,  and DevOps. The areas of focus is present across the various silos in an organization, irrespective of the function. This focusing helps in prioritizing the efforts of the organization. The areas to focus are listed as per requirements of the organiation.

A focus area may also have a combination of generic governance components and  their variants.

There is no limit on the number of focus areas a organization can have. This unlimited number of focus areas makes COBIT open-ended. An organization need to identify focus areas of concern.

The COBIT 2019 Framework supports addition of new focus areas as organizational requirement.

SMEs (subject matter experts) and practitioners can also contribute  to the open-ended COBIT model.
