In this, we will learn the concepts of Snowball and Snowball Edge.

SOA-C01 exam is updated to AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02).

AWS Snowball

  • Migrate bulk data from on-premises storage and Hadoop clusters to S3 buckets.
  • Has an HDFS client, to migrate data directly from Hadoop clusters into an S3 bucket.
  • To migrate,
    • create a job in the AWS Management Console
    • a Snowball appliance will be automatically shipped to you.
    • Then, connect to local network,
    • Use the Snowball client to select and transfer the file directories to the Snowball device.
    • After data transfer, the Snowball’s E-Ink shipping label will automatically update.
    • Ship the device back to AWS.
    • Upon receipt at AWS, data is transferred from Snowball to S3 bucket.
  • Snowball client uses AES-256-bit encryption.
  • Encryption keys are never shipped with the Snowball device
Snowball and Snowball Edge

AWS Snowball Edge

  • It is a type of Snowball device with on-board storage and compute power for select AWS capabilities
  • an undertake local processing and edge-computing workloads
  • can transfer data between local environment and AWS
  • devices have three options for device configurations
    • storage optimized
    • compute optimized
    • with GPU
  • Encryption is enforced
  • import or export data between local environments and Amazon S3
  • can cluster Snowball Edge devices
  • File share or Network File System (NFS) mount point, supported
  • AWS services supported
    • AWS S3
    • Then, AWS EC2
    • AWS Lambda
