COBIT Principles are important basis for the COBIT 2019 framework. A principle is a value which guides behavior or evaluation. Principles form the basis of our interactions and behavior. Similarly for the governance system.

COBIT 2019 has its basis on following sets of principles:

  • Principles enlisting the core requirements of a governance system for I&T
  • Principles to build a governance system for the organization

There are 6 governance system principles in COBIT 2019. The governance principle ensures assessment of the stakeholder needs as per organizational objectives. It also sets direction through prioritization and decision-making. This helps in performance monitoring and compliance against the set direction and objectives.

COBIT 2019 has  6 system principles for a governance system:

  • Satisfy stakeholder needs and to generate value.
  • Many components form to make a governance system
  • The  governance system should be dynamic.
  • There is difference amongst activities and structures for governance and management.
  • Option of customization as per the organizational requirements.
  • The governance system includes those organizational functions.

The three principles for a governance framework are

  • The framework be based on a conceptual model.
  • The framework should be open and flexible.
  • The governance framework be aligned to relevant major related standards, frameworks and regulations.
