For Auto Electrician – Gold

The ECS Auto Electrotechnician card is for individuals who work on automobile vehicles’ electrical systems at an NVQ Level 3 grade. Maintenance, repair, adjustments, and installation of electrical and electronic components that are independent of the motor vehicle, as well as associated rudimentary mechanical adjustments, are all part of the job description for such personnel. The applicants must also be qualified workers in the automotive sector who are capable of doing the task independently and competently.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Auto Electrician Card

Following is the eligibility criterion for an ECS Auto Electrician card are –

  • Must have successfully completed one of the following –
    • an Approved Apprenticeship as an Auto Electrician, or
    • a Level 3 NVQ in the Installation and Maintenance of Auto Electrical Systems
  • Must hold a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
    • Note: Auto Electrician Card is available to applicants who hold the historic qualifications.

For Building Controls Engineer – Gold

ECS Building card is issued for operatives who work unsupervised to install and maintain integrated building controls that helps to manage the environmental services within a building, for the comfort of its users. In general an ECS Building Controls Engineer work includes the installation, commissioning, repair and maintenance of electromechanical, electronic or pneumatic measurement, control and regulation devices that are used in the building controls industry. Note the qualifications required for this card range from the industry NVQ level 3, to specialist courses managed and run by the BCIA.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Building Control Engineer Card

Following is the eligibility criterion for an ECS Building Controls Engineer card –

1. Should have successfully completed ONE of the following:

  • an Approved Apprenticeship in Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), or
  • BEMS Level 3 NVQ Diploma, or
  • Level 3 NVQ in electrical installation and has successfully completed the BEMS Industry End Point Assessment, or
  • Full Electrical Installation Level 3 Technical Certificate – AND: –
  • Must have successfully passed an Assessment of Occupational Competence – either the AM2 or BEMS Industry End Point Assessment
  • Must have completed the following 3 modules of the Building Controls Training Scheme – Fundamentals of HVAC & Building Technology (BC1); Measuring & Control Technology (BC2); Hydraulics in Building Services (BC3) that make up the BCIA Technical Certificate 
  • Must have an employer reference confirming two years experience working on Building Energy Management Systems, subsequent to the satisfactory completion of training and immediately prior to the application for this occupational discipline

2. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Building Controls Integrator – White with gold stripe

Primary role of ECS Building Controls Integrator is to support the commission process of building energy management systems, which includes setting up, programming and end user training in the operating of the installed systems. ECS Building Controls Integrator is designed for technical personnel who need to assist with the installation of building control systems but do not require the entire extent of the industry apprenticeship to do so.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Building Controls Integrator

Following is the eligibility criterion for an ECS Building Controls Integrator card –

  • BCIA Technical Certificate, which is awarded on completion of the following three modules of the BCIA Training Scheme: – (1) Fundamentals of HVAC & Building Technology (BC1); (2) Measuring & Control Technology (BC2) and (3) Hydraulics in Building Services (BC3)
  • Formal BS7671 qualification in the current edition of the wiring regulations (currently BS7671: 2008, 17th edition)
  • They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Distribution Networks Electrician – Gold

ECS Distribution Networks Electrician card is meant for operatives working in the supply distribution sector. In general, operatives will be working for a contractor installing, commissioning and testing high voltage electrical networks above and below ground, at sites during their construction or refurbishment.

Eligibility Criterion for Distribution Networks Electrician

Eligibility Criterion for an ECS Distribution Networks Electrician card are –

1. Must have successfully completed one of the following routes –

  • Approved Apprenticeship as a Distribution Networks Electrician
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electricity Systems Technology Engineering
  • Full Level 3 Technical Certificate, PLUS
  • ECITB NVQ Level 3 in Maintaining Plant and Electrical Systems 100/3335/x
  • LV and HV Distribution Networks Operator Company training

2. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Electrical Fitter – Gold

ECS Electrical Fitter’s card is for skilled operatives in general working unsupervised to assemble, install and maintain equipment associated with low voltage electrical systems and their electromechanical and electronic parts – like machines, drive mechanisms, protective components, controls, regulator equipment and signals.

In case you hold an ECITB NVQ Level 3 you can have the ACE (Assuring Competence in Engineering Construction) logo shown on your card.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Electrical Fitter Card

Following eligibility criterion must be satisfied to hold an Electrical Fitter’s ECS card –

1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –

  • Approved Apprenticeship as an Electrical Fitter
  • ECITB Level 3 NVQ in Installing and Commissioning Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Plant)
  • ECITB Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Electrical
  • approved Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Fitting of Equipment

2. Must be trained to the current edition of the IET Wiring Regulations, (BS7671)

3. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Electrical Winder – Gold

ECS Electrical Winder’s card has been created for skilled operatives working unsupervised in the assembly, installation, testing and maintenance of electrical machines and equipment that use electrical winding as an integral part of its construction.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Electrical Winder Card

Following is the eligiblity criterion for an ECS Electrical Winder card –

1) Must have successfully completed ONE of the following:

  • Approved Apprenticeship in Electrical Machine Repair and Rewinds, or
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Machine Repair and Rewinds

2) Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Experienced Worker – Standard – White with brown stripe

ECS Experienced Worker card (with a brown stripe) is for candidates having a recognised technical certificate, but do not hold a full industry qualification such as NVQ Level 3. ECS Experienced Worker is only valid for 18 months and cannot be renewed. Further, this card is only issued to people who need to to complete the formal industry qualification meet the requirements of an ECS gold card and plan to do this within the next 18 months. Candidates would be required to qualify to NVQ 3 level during the life of this card and to upgrade to a gold card candidate must have qualified JIB Mature Candidate Assessment.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Eligibility Worker

Following is the eligibility criterion for ECS Experienced Worker card are –

  • Must provide proof of a JIB recognised electrical theory qualification.
  • They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Household Appliances Electrician – Gold

ECS Household Appliances card is for Household Appliance Electricians there work involves installing, commissioning, maintaining and repairing electrical household appliances. These appliances may be brown and white goods, or specialist equipment built by a manufacturer for a specific purpose. The duties of ECS Household Appliances Electrician card holder includes the demonstration of appliances to ensure their appropriate use by customers and clients.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Household Appliances card

Following is the eligiblity criterion for an ECS Household Appliances card: –

1. Must have successfully completed either –

  • Approved Apprenticeship in Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Products and Equipment, orLevel 3 NVQ in Household Electrical Products and Equipment

2. Must have current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Installation Electrician – Gold

The ECS Installation Electrician card is for NVQ Level 3 qualified professionals who operate unsupervised in a consumer’s electrical installation on the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of low voltage electrical and electronic equipment and appliances. The ECS Installation Electrician card verifies that the candidate has completed a rigorous industry-recognized competence-based certification that covers technical theory as well as practical and competency tests.

To apply for this card, the candidate must have a JIB-recognized UK competency-based qualification (e.g., Electrotechnical Level 3 NVQ or a formal UK electrotechnical apprenticeship) as well as a formal BS7671 qualification in the current edition of the wiring regulations in effect at the time of application. As per the guidelines issued, from January 1, 2019 all the applicants for this card will be required to hold BS7671:2018 and also signup to become a Registered Electrician.

Full qualification requirements depends on when you are trained. In case you are trained outside UK then you are required to demonstrate the same qualification standard as UK trained electricians.

Note that if candidates are not qualified to the Level 3 NVQ, or cannot provide certificates to prove the qualifications, then you have three options –
  • JIB Mature Candidate Assessment helps operatives to become accredited at Level 3 standard
  • Other ECS cards that will allow site access to carry out specific work, such as Labourer or Experienced Worker. These cards can be upgraded to a gold card when the candidate qualifies to the industry standard.
  • In case you are a Qualified Supervisor with the NICEIC,ELECSA or the ECA, then you may be able to apply for a gold card via them.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Installation Electrician card

Currently the Level 3 NVQ  in Electrical Installation has been made mandatory requirement for the Installation Electrician ECS gold card . In case a candidate is trained prior to 1999 and is also trained to what has been classed as the ‘industry-recognised standard’ at that time then the candidate would be eligible for a gold card application. But candidates must supply proof of your qualifications and certificates.

Following is the eligibility criterion for ECS Installation Electrician card –

  • Must have recognised competency based UK qualification
  • Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
  • They must have a formal BS7671 qualification in the current edition of the wiring regulations in force when your application is made. Starting from January 1, 2019 this will be a recognised BS7671:2018 qualification.

For Instruments Mechanic – Gold

ECS Instruments Mechanic card has been designed for skilled professionals working in measurement and control systems for plant and industrial production lines – specifically the installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of electromechanic, electronic or pneumatic measurement, control and regulation devices used in process engineering.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Instruments Mechanic card

Following is the eligibility criterion for an ECS Instruments Mechanic card –

  1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –
  • Approved Apprenticeship in Instrument Servicing and Maintenance
  • NVQ Level 3 in Instrument Servicing
  • NVQ Level 3 in Installing Plant and Systems – Pipefitting
  • Then, NVQ Level 3 in Maintaining Plant and Systems – Instrument and Controls

2. Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Electrical Labourer – White with green stripe

ECS Electrical Labourer card is for skilled operatives working in the electrical industry in a supporting role to assist electricians and other qualified staff with the installation of cables and other unskilled work, under supervision. Such that they are to assist but not carry out any craft work that an electrician carries out. Note that, a labourer has a specific job role within the JIB grading structure.

There are some situations when ECS Electrical Labourer card card may be issued even if you cannot meet the qualification requirements of other cards such as Installation Electrician. This means that in case you hold a Labourer card, then you can upgrade to an ECS gold card once you have gained further qualifications.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Electrical Labourer card

Route 1: Must have a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification

  • Candidate must have a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification such as C&G 2365, 2330 or 2360 (or EAL equivalents) to be accepted for your Labourer card.
  • Must pass the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment.

Route 2: When you do not hold a JIB-approved theory qualification

In case the cant do not hold a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification, following would be required:

1. Must have successful completed ONE of the following Health & Safety courses :-

  • CCNSG Safety Passport – National Course or Renewal Course
  • Safety Passport Alliance (SPA) Core H&S Course
  • IOSH Working Safely (IOSH Approved Centre Classroom invigilated exam only – not online)

2. Must have passed ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment such that you should passed any of the above courses over three years ago.

Note – If you have taken the courses listed in Case 1 within the last three years, then you need not have to sit the separate ECS HS&E Assessment.

3. Must have a proof of employment in the electrical industry

This proof can be submitted either in the form of a written reference from employer to confirm your employment at that company. Furthermore, in case you normally work for an employment business the you should obtain a signed letter from the business to confirm your dates of engagement as an Electrical Labourer.

For Maintenance Electrician – Gold

ECS Maintenance Electrician gold card is primarily for operatives working on electrotechnical installations, plant and equipment so as to make sure their safe and continued operation. This shows that the operative has completed a formal industry regulated competency based qualification, that includes technical theory with practical and competency assessments.

In order to apply for this card candidate must have JIB recognised UK competency based qualification (electrotechnical Level 3 NVQ or a formal UK electrotechnical apprenticeship) and hold a formal BS7671 qualification in the current edition of the wiring regulations in force when your application is made.

Note – From 1st January 2019 applicants for this card applicants would be required to hold BS7671:2018 and also to signup to become a Registered Electrician. But if the applicant is trained outside the UK you must demonstrate the same qualification standard as UK trained electricians. For details visit the non-UK qualifications page.

However, if you are not qualified to the UK Level 3 NVQ, or cannot provide certificates to prove qualifications, following two options are available:

  • JIB Mature Candidate Assessment helps operatives to become accredited at Level 3 standard
  • Other ECS cards that will allow site access to carry out specific work. These cards can be upgraded to a gold card when you qualify to the industry standard.
Eligibility Criterion for CS Maintenance Electrician gold card

1. Must have successfully completed one of the following recognised competency based UK qualifications .

  • Approved Apprenticeship in Electrical Maintenance
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Maintenance
  • Level 3 NVQ in Engineering Maintenance (Electrical or Electronic pathway)
  • ECITB Level 3 NVQ in Maintaining Plant and Systems – Electrical

2. Must have completed a formal BS7671 qualification in the current edition of the wiring regulations in force when the application is made. From January 1st 2019 this will be a recognised BS7671:2018 qualification.

3. Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Marine Electrician – Gold

ECS Marine Electrician gold card is for skilled professional who are required to install and maintain electrotechnical equipment in boats, ships, underwater craft, offshore platforms and drilling equipment.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Marine Electrician gold card

1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –

  • Approved Electrotechnical Apprenticeship in Marine Practices
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Marine Engineering

2. Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Office Machines Mechanic – Gold

ECS Office Machines Mechanic card is for skilled operatives who are required to install, commission and maintain electrotechnical machines, appliances and communications components in commercial offices. Furthermore, these machines may be standard manufacturer’s equipment, or specialist equipment designed by a manufacturer for a specific purpose.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Office Machines Mechanic card

1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –

  • Approved Apprenticeship Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Office Machines and Equipment
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrical and Electronic Servicing of Electrical Office Machines and Equipment

2. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

Note: ECS Office Machines Mechanic card is available to applicants who hold the historic qualifications.

Radio/Television Electrician – Gold

ECS Radio/Television Electrician card is for skilled Radio/Television Electricians who work unsupervised to install, commission, maintain and repair radio and television receiving and/or transmitting equipment.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Radio/Television Electrician card

1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –

  • Approved Apprenticeship in Radio/Television Installation, Maintenance and Servicing
  • NVQ Level 3 in Radio/Television Installation, Maintenance and Servicing

2. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Telecommunications Fitter – Gold

ECS Telecommunications Fitter card has been built for skilled operatives to carry out the installation, commissioning, repair and maintenance of telecommunications equipment.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Telecommunications Fitter card

1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –

  • Approved Apprenticeship in Installation and Maintenance of Telecommunications
  • NVQ Level 3 in Telecommunications Installation and Maintenance

2. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Wireman/Panel Builder – Gold

ECS Wireman / Panel Builder card has been designed for operatives that install the internal cabling or equipment into panels designed to provide a power distribution or control function for a specific installation. Further, the Card holders should also also be involved in the pre-delivery inspection and testing of a control panel or the commissioning of a panel once installed on site by an Installation Electrician.

Eligibility Criterion for ECS Wireman / Panel Builder card

1. Must have successfully completed ONE of the following –

  • Approved Apprenticeship in Panel Wiring /Panel Building
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services – Panel Wiring / Panel Builder
  • Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Manufacture Engineering (fitting and assembly)

2. Must have current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
